Warrior (2011)

Watching the Movie:

Very solid (at times downright spectacular) "sports" movie. It's been called by a lot of people much smarter than me the "Guy Chick Flick" and that's not too far off accurate; as there's definitely a lot of drama front and center. At times it feels somewhat slow and overly long; but it's second and third acts more than make up for the pace of the first 3rd of the movie

Screening the Film:

As a film, it's amazing. Images of family (specifically father and brotherhood), obligation, mass media, social structures, leadership, and even nationalism (Why Koba had to be not only Russian, but wear the old Soviet Hammer and Sickle is interesting enough an image to consider in and of itself, especially since he was played by Olympic Gold Medalist USA Wrestler Kurt Angle). In 15-20 years it will be very interesting to view this imagery in a historical context.

Best Dialogue:

Paddy Conlon: Come on, kiddo. I've been there. I've done it. I've seen it. You can trust me. I'll understand.

Tom Conlon: Spare me the compassionate father routine, Pop. The suit don't fit.

Paddy Conlon: I'm really trying here, Tommy.

Tom Conlon: You're trying? Now? Where were you when it mattered? I needed this guy back when I was a kid. I don't need you now. It's too late now. Everything's already happened. You and Brendan don't seem to understand that. Let me explain something to you: the only thing I have in common with Brendan Conlon is that we have absolutely no use for you.

The Bottom Line:

There have been two films made in the last half decade or so that absolutely belong on the shelf of every American male over the age of 18. Gran Torino (2008) is the first one, and Warrior is now the second. It's 140 minute runtime will tie you down to watch it; but its well worth being reminded whats important in life, and what it's like to be a man in America in 2012. It's not a good enough movie to be given the masterpiece 5 of 5, but I'll go

4.25 out of 5.
